PRESIDENT'S PAGE 2012
So the curling season is upon us while we are still waiting for the 'Indian Summer'. Our ice allocation is very close to what we requested and after a bit of reshuffling of 'Morton Mixed' dates our schedules are out to members. The new system of collection of the DIBCA levy has caused a bit consternation but I am very happy to report that all our members have agreed to cooperate with the new regime.

PRESIDENT'S PAGE 2011
Well we've had our summer (allegedly) and for most of us curling probably seems like a distant memory. But while we were caught up in our various seasonal activities the curling world has been working away steadily in the background in preparation for the playing season ahead.
A 'Masterclass' will run at the Ice Bowl on Saturday 1st October - details here.
Don't be put off by the title - all abilities are welcome and this is a great chance to receive top class coaching, video analysis etc.
in our home ice rink.
Our ice has been allocated and is very close to what we requested. Schedules are finalised and will be with members shortly. Meanwhile our immediate past president is immersed in Ladies Branch business (no summer holiday allowed!) - update here.
Anne's two years in charge of this club was famously when we all got to know 'everything' via text message. As the first President of Dumfries Ladies Branch, she continues to be a font of knowledge on a wider scale than ever and Christine and I will endeavour to relay information and keep everyone updated (I've even put my geriatric phone out to pasture and got a new one to try and keep up) It has to be said that Anne is a hard act to follow - an attempt to summarise her input and convey our gratitude is here.
As we start to look to the forthcoming season we may also reflect on some of the club's history. As Rosemary Maxwell, first president of Nithsdale Ladies Curling Club, was laid to rest and many of us recall our personal memories, the spirit of curling is truly at the forefront. Although Rosemary's legendary 'gift' shots to the opposition when she felt the game was too one-sided is not always the most practical option, the underlying aim of making an inclusive and enjoyable game for everyone is nonetheless a laudable goal.
In the coming season, as we welcome several new members to our midst and hope to attract even more, let us continue to strive to help each other as much as possible and keep 'pulling together' for everyone's benefit.
Here's to the season ahead!

Barbours Bonspiel Win
Barbours Bonspiel Win
Dumfries Ice Bowl was bustling on Wednesday 25th January as twelve rinks of ladies assembled for the annual Barbours Bonspiel. This longstanding, popular event combines tough competition with a very sociable atmosphere and is a highlight of the Ladies Branch calendar. Six-end games were followed by a delicious lunch then the 'schenkel system' determined the afternoon draw. Teams with their sights set on a second victory also strived to maximise their shots scored as this would determine the overall winner. It was a finely balanced contest which kept scorers Billy Green and Christine Harvey ‘on their toes’ and ultimately only three shots bridged the three top teams. Nithsdale Ladies rink - Shiela Glendinning (skip), Nancy Gallacher, Alison Wilson and Margaret Harvey clinched top spot with Crocketford runners-up and Dumfries third. Mr Colin Barbour presented the trophy and gift tokens and was sincerely thanked for the generous sponsorship which benefited all participants. Dumfries Ladies Branch President Anne Templeton also thanked the Ice Bowl caterers for excellent food and everyone else who had contributed to the success of the event.

In the other section Mima, Brenda, Avril and Margaret were top after two games but were trumped in the last. A very good day was had by all.

Apologies for the lack of updates. Now that BT Broadband have got their act together (fingers crossed) updates should be more 'up to date'.
Just to catch up -
Our Opening Bonspiel on 29th September (seems like a lifetime ago) saw a full turnout of four rinks playing two 4- end game. Congratulations to Lesley and her rink who were worthy winners and special thanks to Lynn and her staff for a fabulous buffet.
We were eating at the Ice Bowl again on 10th November after the Lyall final which was won by Caroline and her rink. Thanks again to the caterers.
On 12th November we failed to progress past the first game of the Henderson Bishop - succumbing to much, much younger opposition!
On 16th November a letter of complaint about the hack on rink five was sent to the Ice Bowl Manager - see here.
A reply has been received to say that this problem has now been dealt with.

Canadian Ladies at Dumfries - The Canadian Ladies Tour graced Dumfries Ice Bowl on Wednesday 17th of November. During their much anticipated visit they were shown round the new curling pad, greeted with coffee and shortbread in the new meeting room and were first to use the new changing facilities. All this came as a great relief to the Dumfries Ladies' Branch Committee in their first hosting venture. As the tour party were piped in to the flower bedecked foyer and greeted by smiling faces they were blissfully unaware of just how close they had come to visiting a building site. All the stops had certainly been pulled out and the result was splendid. The proceeding five games of curling, on superb ice in the original ice arena, were hotly contested with Dumfries winning two and the final shot tally being : Canada - 35, Dumfries - 25. Our visitors were charmingly gracious and generous of spirit - wonderful ambassadors for their country and for the sport of curling. They certainly lived up to their billing of - Women's Friendship Curling Tour and those of us who took part have lasting memories of a momentous day of which Dumfries can be very proud.
